With FontLab 7, you can create, open, modify, draw, export, adjust spacing, kerning and hinting of desktop, web, color and variable OpenType fonts for any Unicode writing system, from Latin, Cyrillic and Greek, to Arabic, Hebrew and Indic, all the way to Chinese, Japanese, emoji, symbols and icons. To create any glyph, including one whose placeholder is not visible in the Font window or Font Map panel, select the Font > Generate Glyphs command, click on the Custom tab and type the glyph name you want to create. In TrueType fonts, the UPM is by convention a power of two, generally set to 1024 or 2048. In an OpenType font, the UPM - or em size is usually set at 1000 units. This is the size of the design grid on which glyphs are laid out. The units-per-em attribute specifies the number of coordinate units on the “em square”, an abstract square whose height is the intended distance between lines of type in the same type size. You can also do this by using the cursor keys ← for moving the glyphs closer and → for moving them farther. To edit a kerning combination, click on the second class (or glyph) in the pair and then drag it closer or farther to the first class (or glyph).
